Moving from Education to Action Learning

Enlightened-Leaders, LLC works with executive teams and corporate departments in a powerful process called the Crucial Conversations™Lab. What each of these teams had in common was that they were stuck. The teams were comprised of individually brilliant executives who were under-performing their collective potential. In some cases the team was driven by strife and mistrust. In other cases they were simply stuck in their ability to move to the next level as a team. Often the senior manager could see enormous potential synergy the team seemed incapable of achieving. For example, we worked with one executive team whose members knew their collective process could be improved by 50% but despaired of getting past team roadblocks that kept them stuck.

It was for these teams that the Crucial Conversations™Lab was designed. These executives weren’t looking for an educational experience. They also had no patience for jumping out of trees or joining in group hugs. They had real problems they wanted to solve in real time—and they wanted to learn repeatable skills of problem-solving that would help them not just make progress, but maintain it.

The Crucial Conversations™Lab is based on an Action Learning model. In essence, it is a combination of instruction and coaching that happens in the process of solving real problems. Based on breakthrough ideas contained in the New York Times bestseller Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking when Stakes are High, this process enables executives to build trust, confront previously undiscussable concerns, and do so in a way that they can repeat and sustain after the lab.


The Crucial ConversationsTM Lab

The Crucial Conversations™ Lab is designed to:

- Help leadership teams quickly and safely resolve the crucial conversations that are keeping them stuck.

- Learn repeatable skills that help them better address crucial conversations on their own in the future.

- Develop leaders through real-time coaching during the training process.

Crucial Conversations are those topics you are either not handling or not handling well that keep you from breakthrough results and high-trust relationships. These are high stakes, emotional and divisive issues that tend to draw out our worst behavior.

Our decided conclusion after training and coaching numerous teams and executives in their crucial conversations is that the best way to learn is by doing—not just talking. In a Crucial Conversations™Lab, individuals are able gain an in-depth understanding of the skills by focusing on real-time issues. As such the lab differs from traditional training. Each session is tailored to safely address the client’s unique conversations. And, you focus on those skills that will most help you—the high leverage areas.


The Process

Data gathering while trust building. Enlightened-Leaders, LLC conducts interviews with each participant to gain an understanding of the crucial conversations that are keeping the team stuck. This process simultaneously helps participants build trust with the facilitator—whom they must have confidence in to build safety while helping the team achieve unprecedented levels of candor.

Skill building while problem-solving. Participants next gather for 1.5-2 days (depending upon the extent of the issues to be addressed). During this time the facilitator blends hard-hitting instruction in skills and principles with facilitated application during which participants address their issues. Profound teaching opportunities occur spontaneously as the facilitator offers real-time coaching to individual participants to help them learn to achieve complete candor while maintaining absolute safety for others.

At the conclusion of the lab, we will recommend follow-up options to allow the team to continue their learning and application of the critical insights they have gained during the process.
